Minor Football Championship

Division 2

Moorefield 6-07

Suncroft 1-06

On Saturday 14th of November the girls of Moorefield and Suncroft served up an entertaining game of football in some terrible conditions. Moorefield GAA club was the venue for this encounter where the home team managed to come out on top.

Suncroft started the brighter with the first point of the game from Nicole Dooley. However Moorefield responded brilliantly with a well worked goal, Hannah Quirke winning the ball from the kick out and making an excellent run to supply Lorraine McSorley, who finished to the net. Moorefield were piling on the pressure now with some excellent work from Kate Hannon in the middle of the field and they added two points to their tally, one from Samantha Cullen and the other from Kayleigh Humphries. Suncroft responded with two more points from the boot of Nicole Dooley after some excellent runs by Rebecca Johnson down the wing. These were to be their last scores of the half, however, as Moorefield took control of the game. Humphries added another point while Kate Hannon finished to the net at the second time of asking after a super ball in from Quirke. Lorraine McSorley was making some fantastic runs in the corner and her work rate paid off as she was rewarded with a point. Moorefield were really in the driving seat now and Carrie Pedley added their third goal of the game, giving Suncroft keeper Risa Ennis no chance with a rocket to the roof of the net. Anna O’Modhrain and Eve Kehoe were performing well in defence for Suncroft, but that didn’t stop Humphries from getting the final score of the half and Moorefield’s fourth goal. Half-time score was Moorefield 4-4 Suncroft 0-3.

The second half started at a blistering pace and Moorefield quickly won a free, which Humphries converted. Humphries knocked over another after a brilliant run by Sarah Murray down the wing to supply her with the ball. Hannon won the ball from the kick out and made a run from midfield to score another point and it was looking like Moorefield were going to run away with the game as Humphries was bearing down on goal. A brilliant save from Risa Ennis sparked Suncroft into life and they took control. Sophie Hobbs won the ball in the middle of the field to supply Rebecca Johnson, who ran at the Moorefield defence before popping it off to Carla Ennis to finish with a point. Ennis added another a couple of minutes later as Suncroft were gaining some momentum and narrowly missed out on a goal, Rachel McNamara catching it on the line and clearing for Moorefield. Ciara Regan and Laura Hannon were working really hard in the Moorefield defence and won some excellent turnovers. However Suncroft had been threatening for a goal and it finally came. Johnson worked hard to win the ball in the middle of the field and supplied Ellen Enright, who spotted the brilliant run from Aine Troy in the corner. Dooley was left unmarked as Troy ran towards goal and when the ball came to her she finished to the corner of the net. Moorefield responded with a goal of their own after another run from the tireless Murray, Samantha Cullen supplying the finish. Suncroft weren’t finished yet and Johnson slotted over a point after some good work on the wing from Ennis. However the final score of the game went to Moorefield, with the superb Kayleigh Humphries getting her second goal of the game after a super ball in from McSorley.

Suncroft battled hard and contributed greatly to what was a very entertaining game of football, but Moorefield supplied proof to the old saying that goals win games, scoring six of them to put the game beyond doubt. Final score was Moorefield 6-7 Suncroft 1-6.
