LADIES FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
SEMI-FINAL
MOOREFIELD 4-06
CARBURY 2-04
A strong second half performance set up Moorefield for a well deserved victory over Carbury in a highly entertaining semi-final played in Carbury on Tuesday evening.
Moorefield got off to a flying start when they won possession from the throw in and sent in a great ball to Hannah Quirke in the full forward line who beat the Carbury goal keeper Miriam Holt for a goal 40 seconds into the game followed by a good point from play from centre half forward Dearbháil Kelly. The next 10 minutes were tough and tight with both teams playing well and having numerous scoring chances but failed to raise the white flag.
The next score of the game came from Carbury when Karen Cummins converted a penalty in the 16th minute and she levelled the game for the first time in the 19th minute with a point from a placed ball.
Moorefield replied instantly with a brilliant point from play from Aisling Curley who made a great run from the half back line to knock over the score. Lynn Herbert had the teams level for the second time when she kicked a good point in the 32nd minute to leave the teams level at half time with a score of 1-02 a piece.
Karen Cummins put Carbury in the lead for the first time when she pointed from play three minutes into the second half but Moorefield responded brilliantly with a crucial goal from Kayleigh Humphries after Ciara Conaty made a great catch from the Carbury kick out and supplied Humphries for the goal to put them back in the lead. This gave Moorefield a great boost and they added three vital points in the next four minutes coming from Dearbháil Kelly to put them into a five point lead.
Carbury replied with a converted free from Karen Cummins but once again Moorefield won possession from the kick out and Ciara Conaty hit a superb point from play. Moorefield were now dominating the game with Ciara Bruce, Amber Masterson and Aisling Curley excelling in the Moorefield defence and Ciara Conaty, Emma Curley and Leanne Curran all causing havoc to the Carbury in the final 10 minutes . Dearbháil Kelly was having a great second half for Moorefield and put them into a comfortable lead when she converted a penalty in the 23rd minute followed by a well worked goal in the 28thminute.
To their credit Carbury battled hard for the final few minutes and their hard work paid off when Karen Cummins scored her second goal in the 32ndminute to reduce the deficit but Moorefield had done enough and deservedly won the game 4-06 to 2-04.
